Enable Instant Articles from Tempest

  • Updated:

Tempest integrates Instant Articles seamlessly into the publisher’s existing workflow. By simply applying a “Facebook Instant Articles” rich term, the publisher will be able to determine whether or not to publish an article as an Instant Article. It is literally that easy.

When the article is published it will be published to both the publisher’s regular site as well as to the Instant Article RSS feed. If users share the post organically and other users access it from the Facebook App on mobile, they will receive the Instant Article version. Note that any changes or updates that are made to the article are also sent to the Instant Article RSS feed and should be reflected in Facebook within a matter of minutes.

Publishing an article as an Instant Article does not publish the Instant Article to the publisher’s Facebook Page. As a result, the workflow for managing communication on the publisher’s Facebook Page will not change unless explicitly modified by the publisher.

Facebook only supports a handful of embeds:

  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Vine
  • Youtube

If an article includes an embed that is not supported by Instant Articles, the article will not be published to Facebook regardless of whether or not the term “Facebook Instant Articles” has been applied. Please ensure that only supported embeds are included on article content that you wish to enable as an Instant Article.

Steps to Enable an Instant Article

Login to Tempest

Select the article that should be enabled for Instant Articles (or create a new article and follow the same steps).

Check the box "Publish as Instant Article" under Promo Information. When this checkbox is selected, the article will be published to both the website and to Instant Articles.

Publish the new article to enable on Instant Articles or UPDATE an existing live article to enable on Instant Articles.

Note that this will allow the article to be published to the RSS feed so that this article is available on Facebook. This means that when a reader accesses the post via the Facebook mobile application that they will see the Instant Article version. This does not publish the article to the publisher's Facebook Page. This is a separate workflow all together which should not be changed by the introduction of Facebook Instant Articles.

To remove an article from Facebook publishers must access their Instant Article library.

To navigate to this portal, from the top of the Facebook Page, click Publishing Tools and then select Instant Articles from the menu on the left of the screen. Every story published as an Instant Article is automatically added to the library of articles found on this Page. To change the publication status of an article, check the box to the left of the article, then select the appropriate status from the Actions dropdown. The options include to edit, delete, publish or unpublish.

“Published” stories are live and visible to the public. “Unpublished” stories are not visible to the public but they are stored as drafts. If a published story is changed to unpublished status, the story is hidden from public view, but the markup content, insights and analytics are preserved.
