One of our favorite tastemakers on the Web, Emily Schuman, just got a new look for her site Cupcakes and Cashmere and we're loving it. Of course, we might be a little biased since the new design is powered by Orion, our award-winning publishing platform and Emily worked on the new look in collaboration with Say Media's design team - but it really does look sharp! Check it out for youself.
As part of her site's bold new design, we checked in with Emily to see what she's most excited about with the new look, what she's working on next (hello, co-branded products!!) – and of course what's catching her eye this season.
Infinite scrolling, a new design - what are some of the things you're most excited about with new site? I'm really excited about how we've reorganized the site. Everything now has a place, whether you're looking for a specific recipe, DIY, or beauty tutorial. I've been writing for over five years, so I have a ton of content - now there's just a really visual way to see it all.
What kinds of things will you be able to do that you weren't able to do before? I'm excited about the infinite scrolling option, the ability to search for outfits by season, and a smart feed that really lets readers discover more relevant content.
What was the process of creating the new site like and how long did it take? Any surprises? It was a fun process, but certainly took a while. I'm a perfectionist, so everything from the fonts, to the sizing, to the general layout was scrutinized over for months. There weren't any real surprises, but just fascinating to realize how all of the trivial details eventually add up, so they're important to recognize.
Your book came out last fall and hit the Publishers Weekly bestseller list (nice!). Any plans for a sequel? Thanks! And yes, I'm currently finalizing the details for my second book with Abrams.
What are some other new projects (editorial, brand, TV or otherwise) you're working on that you're most excited about for the second half of 2013 and beyond once the new site is live? I just signed with a licensing agency to create co-branded products and eventually a Cupcakes and Cashmere line.
Your Ask Emily video series looks like a hit too - what are some of the most popular episodes? I've really enjoyed the segment. I receive so many questions from readers that it felt like the only logical solution - especially since a lot of people end up asking the same questions. The most popular questions have been a bit more personal - like my favorite things to do on a date with my husband.
And we have to ask ... any favorite fashion finds for the season? I'm all about neutrals for fall (particularly navy and gray), structured bags, and a take on the '60s.
