SXSW Music Preview: 7 Questions with Lord Huron

h1 It's a custom in the Calypso tradition to use a grandiose title. I always liked that.

Ben Schneider, Lord Huron

What started as a solo music project for Michigan native Ben Schneider is now a full-fledged band called Lord Huron based in L.A. and bringing the mystical sounds of the American West to audiences around the country. The band's first album, Lonesome Dream, debuted last fall and as Rolling Stone put it, "Ben Schneider's soaring folk-rock project conjures a life unfettered and outside of time."

Lord Huron is also one of the six bands we're so excited to have live at our SXSW party this year. Lord Huron will be headlining on the rooftop stage (it's going to be epic – don't miss it).

We checked in with Lord Ben for a preview of what the band will be playing in Austin, what he's listening to, and other surprises.

Tell us the story of how your band got its name… We're named after the Lake where I spent much of my childhood. As a kid I always imagined myself as the ruler of that part of the world. It's also a custom in the Calypso tradition to use a grandiose title. I always liked that.

How would you describe your sound in 140 characters or less? I'm not so good at describing it. I'd just encourage people to have a listen and see for themselves.

You're playing at SXSW this year. What do you love about playing in Austin and at SXSW? We always have a good time playing in Austin because the people there love live music. To be honest SXSW can be a little bit hectic, but we're taking on a lighter load than on our last visit. I think we played 11 shows in 4 days. It was just a bit much. This go around we'll have some more time to enjoy ourselves.
