File this one under cool: A new free app called Field Trip works on your phone to reveal quirky, fun and secret places that are near you as you walk. You can personalize the app by selecting your interests and Field Trip will automatically let you know the best places to shop, eat and have fun as you move around a city. Created by (who else?) Google, the app is a bit like having Google's Project Glass glasses in your phone. Yes, we really are all cyborgs now.
As if that alone weren't a reason to try it – we're happy to announce Field Trip features content from two of our favorite sites: Gardenista and Remodelista. Tell Field Trip you're interested in architecture, historic sites & events, lifestyle, offers & deals, food, drinks & fun, movie locations, outdoor art or obscure locations, and it will give you recommendations that match your profile. It's a great way to get explore a city and get useful insider-y local content at the exact moment you can use it. Other premium content partners include Cool Hunting, Atlas Obscura, Daily Secret, Eater, Inhabitat and Curbed - to name just a few.
Want more? This Saturday, September 29th Google is hosting launch events called Field Trip Day in six cities (Boston, NYC, Chicago, Minneapolis, LA, and SF). The events are also free – sign up here to attend in your city.
