If there's one thing advertising insiders love to do (besides talk about "creating a conversation" over drinks), it's write blogs about their work. In fact, there are so many blogs about the ad world, it's hard to know which ones are worth reading. Sure AdAge and Adweek are great when we're looking for informative news about advertising trends and technology, but when you want some insider analysis while also having a bit of a laugh, these are the sites we turn to:
AdPulp calls itself "an industry site with an activist slant from a group of ad guys." The writing is conversational and no bs, which we appreciate, but even more, we value that they heap praise when appropriate, but aren't too scared to question or criticize work and industry practices. We also love the attention-grabbing headlines, like Say Something Memorable in an Interesting Way or Shut the Hell Up.
AdFreak is "the best and worst of creativity in advertising, media, marketing, and design" from the editors at Adweek. It's also super funny. Daily insight on the fascinating ways marketers try to get consumers to buy things is paired with articles like 30 Freakiest Ads of 2011, The 50 Gayest Ads Ever, and 25 Most Epic Ads that Aren't Apple's ‘1984'.
Agency Spy is a Media Bistro blog that aims to keep the ad industry honest by "airing out their dirty secrets." Reading Agency Spy is a bit like reading "50 Shades of Grey" – it's something best done in private, but there's something about the insider gossip and (at times) crass tone that makes this site a guilty pleasure.
Mark Duffy, the self-proclaimed Best Ad Blogger in the World™ (™ pending) moved his rants (good and bad) from his personal anonymous blog to BuzzFeed a few months ago. Acerbic and hilarious, his posts are to-the-point and wholly entertaining.
AdRants provides "no holds barred commentary on the state of advertising and media industries." The content is a good mix posts that provide thoughtful analysis and insight paired with observations on the spots everyone is talking about. In addition, there are lots of free white papers and case studies.
Adland has been around since 1996 and was the world's first advertising blog. Self described as "all of the adnews not fit to print," most of the content relies on submissions from their over 90,000 community member, but DaBitch, the original editor who still works in advertising as an Art Director, provides smart editorial that will make you laugh… and think.
With a mantra of "post the best and forget the rest," Adverblog is the place to go to discover creative and compelling digital advertising. With daily videos, compelling infographics, and smart writing, this website is less snarky than most of the others on the list, which frankly, is a bit refreshing.
