h1 Tomboys have influenced the expanses of popular culture in fashion, film, music, literature and beyond.

Lizzie Garrett Mettler, Tomboy Style

Lizzie Garrett Mettler loves men's watches, unfussy button-down shirts, winter tartans with white jeans, scuffed up Birkin bags and other sartorial pleasures that are the essence of her site, a place that celebrates Tomboy Style. But being a tomboy isn't just about dressing like a boy - it's a state of mind, and tomboys are measured in equal parts wardrobe and spirit, which Lizzie also captures on her site.

Tomboy Style recently became one of our new media partners, so we caught up Lizzie (let's face it, a great Tomboy name) to ask her about her take on role models, her most popular posts – and her favorite tomboy style items right now.

Are you a tomboy? Yes. I grew up as a textbook tomboy and rediscovered the identity in my 20s.

What's the essence of tomboy style? Tomboy Style is measured in equal parts style and substance. I always say that although clothing is what often identifies a tomboy, it's her inherent sense of confidence, rebelliousness and adventure that makes her wholly so.

Who are your favorite tomboy role models of all time? There are really so many. Katharine Hepburn and Coco Chanel are two I often mention, but one that I often look to is Jane Birkin. She always looked the height of chic in jeans, a simple white t-shirt, and messy hair. I love how the most coveted ‘it’ bag bears her name, but she couldn’t care less about the status some believe a handbag can bestow—her own Birkin bags are scuffed up, worn out, covered in stickers and adorned with worry beads. To me, that is the ultimate in tomboy style.

For those that are new to your site, what are some great posts to start with? The ICON posts. They are quick shots of inspiring women with great style.

What are your all-time most popular posts? And what do you think they say about your readers and what they crave? I've created a few grids, or what magazine editors call "charticles" that people have really loved because they can find where they fit into a style or historical era.

What are some of your favorite tomboy style items right now? A.P.C. jeans, a navy blue crew neck sweater from Ann Mashburn. I keep it pretty simple.

What's something your readers would be surprised to learn about you? I wear dresses, with some regularity.

You've also got a book (congrats). What's next? I'm working on a few things that aren't signed and sealed yet, so stay tuned.
